Risk Management

Definition

Risk Management is the discipline of testing ambition against real-world consequence early, naming what deserves protection, what needs testing, and what should never be sacrificed merely for speed or approval.

It resolves the tension between avoiding risk, which mortgages the future, and ignoring it, which mortgages it differently.

The tension it resolves

Organizations tend to displace risk downstream into compliance and audit reviews, which arrive too late to shape the original choice. By the time a risk becomes a formal control issue, exposure may already be built into the strategy or incentive system itself.

What the competency demands

The competency requires bringing risk into the conversation while choice still exists, calibrating authority to consequence, and telling apart risk that is the necessary price of relevance from risk that quietly spends trust for speed.

Across Levels of Work

Level 1 — Quality Risk is managed through attention to standards and the discipline to stop when work moves outside its intended condition.
Level 2 — Service Risk becomes visible at interfaces, where unclear ownership or vague thresholds let commitments break quietly.
Level 3 — Practice Continuous Improvement redesigns methods that keep producing the same exposure; Innovation defines what is reversible before scaling.
Level 4 — Strategic Development Risk becomes architectural, traveling through the seams between functions rather than belonging to any single one.
Level 5 — Strategic Intent Direction decides which uncertainties are worth carrying; Viability validates whether the chosen bets can be governed and endured.
